Early Foundations: What It Takes to Be an Effective Junior Lawyer

Rose Legal is hosting an upcoming CPD seminar, How to Be a More Effective Junior Lawyer, designed specifically for those in their first two to three years of practice. Led by William Barrington, Special Counsel at Thomson Geer, the session will focus on the practical realities of life in practice, from managing internal expectations to drafting with confidence and clarity. Drawing on more than a decade of experience advising on complex commercial and infrastructure matters, William brings a grounded perspective shaped by high-stakes environments and the lessons that emerge from them.

This seminar reflects Rose Legal’s broader commitment to the legal profession. In addition to our advisory work on legal costs, including expert reporting and Security for Costs applications, we are focused on supporting the profession’s long-term strength through education and mentoring. We understand that capable, confident junior lawyers strengthen not only individual firms but the legal system as a whole.

The event also reflects our commitment to access to justice. All proceeds will be donated to Toongabbie Legal Centre (TLC), a vital community legal service that has provided free legal advice to disadvantaged individuals in Western Sydney since 2007. With no ongoing funding, TLC’s work relies on the support of the legal community to continue assisting those who face significant barriers to legal access. Rose Legal is proud to support this work and help increase its reach through our partnership.

For those at the beginning of their legal careers (and for the firms and mentors who support them) this session offers a timely opportunity to refocus on the fundamentals. What separates a technically competent junior lawyer from an effective one is rarely brilliance. It is the discipline to be prepared, the humility to ask the right questions, and the commitment to develop good habits early.
